Hayv Kahraman is an artist who works in many different forms of art. Born in Baghdad, Iraq in 1981, she grew up during a difficult time with wars happening around her. She remembers dust storms, playing cards by candlelight in a basement, and seeing bombs fall from her window.
When Hayv was 11, her family fled Iraq as refugees and settled in Sweden. There, she felt different because of her background and was even treated badly by a teacher because of her race. This made her give up on music and ballet, but art became an outlet for her. A supportive art teacher helped her believe in her talent.
Hayv studied art in Florence, Italy, where she learned from the great masters of the past. Today, her art combines traditional painting, sculpture, and drawing with modern techniques like 3D scanning and design. She also draws inspiration from her Iraqi heritage and other cultures, like Japanese woodblock prints.
Hayv's art focuses on the experiences of women, especially during war and times of change. She explores how women face violence and hardship, and how they struggle to find their place in the world.
Hayv's work has been shown in galleries and museums around the world. She has even won a prestigious award for her art!
