Backstory -
Many recognize actress Mila Kunis as a star. Few know she’s also a refugee.
Kunis was born in present-day Ukraine to a Jewish family with Holocaust-survivor grandparents. When facing antisemitism in the USSR, her parents fled with her and her brother to the United States for improved opportunities. They arrived with $250, and she was seven.
As a child refugee, Kunis faced struggles in her early education, not knowing English and little about American culture. She said it felt like “being blind and deaf.” However, she persevered, and her father enrolled her in acting classes at age 9, initiating her career.
In 1998, producers cast Kunis as Jackie Burkhart in That ‘70s Show, which ran 8 seasons and won her multiple awards. In 1999, she began voicing Meg Griffin in Family Guy and has continued since.
She transitioned from TV to film, starring in movies like 2010’s Black Swan, for which she was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress. Other notable films include Gia (1998) and Oz the Great and Powerful (2013).
Kunis has been active in philanthropy. After Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, Kunis and her husband began fundraising to help Ukrainian refugees. They’ve raised millions and promised to match all funds.
Kunis remains active in her field and an inspiration to many. Her hard work and impact make her the living embodiment of the American Dream."They say stories like this only happen in movies. I cannot believe it's happening to me."
